Bulldog Wrestling 2013/2014

The DeLand Bulldogs had some team and individual accomplishments in the 2013/2014 season.  The team’s dual meet record improved to 15 wins and only 4 losses, a marked improvement over last years losing record.
The Bulldogs placed 7th at the South Beach Slam, 18th at the Bill Scott Lyman Holiday Tournament and 13th at the Flagler Rotary.  “The Chunk” trophy, a competition between cross town rivals, was again won by the University Titans, of Orange City, by a score of 37 – 28.  The team placed 3rd at the 5 Star Conference, 4th at the Districts and 15th at the Regions, but did not qualify any wrestlers for “The States”.
A number of individuals had outstanding seasons:
At 108 lbs., Junior Hope Dargan attempted to repeat as girl’s state champion. She had 5 first period pins at “The States” and one loss placing her 3rd for the second time in three years.
At 113 lbs., Sophomore Lucas Ruiz has improved to a 28 – 14 record and placed at the Flagler Rotary, the 5 Star Conferences and at the Districts, qualifying him for the Regions.
At 120 lbs. Junior Logan Wishart placed at the South Beach Slam, the Flagler Rotary, the 5 Star Conference and the Districts, compiling a 29 – 16 record and qualifying for the Regions.
At 138 lbs., Freshman Will Hennessy surprised everyone by qualifying for the Regions with only 5 varsity matches under his belt.
At 145 lbs. 2013 State Qualifier and Senior Justin Folsom posted an excellent 35 – 13 record, top on the team, placing in the Lyman, Flagler Rotary, 5 Star Conference and District tournaments, qualifying for the Regions.
At 152 lbs., Junior Daniel Baker improved to a 24 – 11 record placing in both the 5 Star and South Beach Slam Tournaments.  But his season was cut short due to injury.
At 160 lbs., Senior Miguel Hernandez posted a 32 – 11 record, placed in the South Beach Slam, the 5 Star Conference and the District tournaments qualifying him for Regions.
At 170 lbs., second year wrestler and Senior Iryan Sanchez dropped a weight class and posted a 33 – 13  record, placed at the Flagler Rotary, the 5 Star Conference and District tournaments making him a Region qualifier.
At 182 lbs., Junior Sean Ponder went up a weight to get a Varsity spot in the lineup.  He posted a 12 – 14 record while placing in the Five Star and District Tournaments and becoming a Region qualifier.

With only four seniors graduating, a crop of incoming freshmen and returning sophomores and juniors, the Bulldogs should improve on this year’s record and individual accomplishments next season.  Look for Jeremy Bassett, Bradley Duell, Mateo Hogan, Jacob Lane, Shawn Somers, Jason Young, “Pablo” Rios, Dawson Bachan, Tucker Stone and Dominic Walker to have a big impact on next year’s lineup.
